About the Data

Why the strip matters to an interest owner

The forward strip is the reference price deck for most reserve evaluations, acquisition bids and lender borrowing bases. The value placed on a royalty or working interest moves with it.

Forward strips

Each curve is the NYMEX settlement for every listed contract month on a given day: WTI light sweet crude in dollars per barrel and Henry Hub natural gas in dollars per MMBtu. A new strip is added on the first trading day of each month from CME Group settlement data.

Realized spot

The dashed line is the monthly average spot price published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration — WTI at Cushing, Oklahoma and Henry Hub, Louisiana — so a strip from any date can be compared with the prices that followed.

Strip history

The 12-, 36- and 60-month strips are the simple averages of the first 12, 36 and 60 contract months of each curve. These are the figures most often applied in reserve reports, bank price decks and hedging decisions.
